Dover, 25-31st August 2001

I must be a masochist, since I'm arranging another week's diving. This time it's in Dover. I've had 2 previous trips there and the diving is exceptional if you like wrecks. Here's the list of people who have expressed an interest.

The Boat

Taurus is a 33ft Blythe catamaran, skippered by Steve Howland and assisted by Sarah. Steve's number is 07860 934712 in case you need to call the boat. It has a small cabin for dry gear, although please don't bring too much. It has a loo and there is plenty of space for kitting up. The boat is normally moored at Granville Dock. To get there, follow the A20 towards Dover. As you enter Dover, you will go across 2 roundabouts, with a Shell garage on the left just after the 2nd. At the 3rd roundabout, take a right into the dock. The keycode for entry to the dock is 5124. The boat costs £372 per day split between us, so with 10 people that works out as £260.40 each for the week.

Accomodation

I've booked the Chandos guest house, 77 Cheriton Road, Folkestone, tel 01303 851202. This is about 15mins from Dover docks. It's run by Don Falvey, a local diver and member of Folkestone BSAC 501. There is 1 double, 3twins and 3single rooms. Cost will be £17.50 a night each apart from the double/twin with ensuite which is £20 pp. The B&B is walking distance from the town and pubs/restaurants

Parking

You can park at the Docks near the Harbour office. On entry to the docks, turn right just before the bridge. A week's parking ticket costs £6.50 from the office. Definitely not Weymouth prices...

Gas etc

We will be getting gas from Naut-Tech.  They are located at Blean, Whitstable Rd, Cantebury Tel: 01227 761232 or 07801 480232 (9am-4pm 7 days or by arrangement)  They will deliver gas for £15 (two pickup/collections per day) which is well worth it when you consider that Blean is a 30 min drive away. They arrive after the first dive to bring filled bottles / take the empties from the first dive. Then after the second dive they do the same. So you're going to need 2 sets or a topoff bottle. They do air, nitrox and trimix - don't forget your Nitrox certification card. Air is £3/tank, nitrox (32%) is £4.50/tank).

The Diving

The wrecks we'll be doing should all be in the 25-35m range. We'll be diving slack water, so there may be a couple of days of early starts! All divers must have a DSMB and a surface detection device (flag, flare, EPIRB etc). On occasion we may have to return to the shot, so bring a distance line. The water around Dover is rather busy so all divers must be prepared to stick to a plan so we can all bag off around the same time. Last year the viz was 4-8m or better, though I'm not promising anything. We'll return to port in between slacks so there's normally plenty of time to get lunch, visit the shops, sunbathe (if it's like last year!)...

According to Steve, dive times will be around the following:
Date Start time Leave time 1st dive time 2nd dive time
Sat 25th 7.00 7:30 8:10 14:30
Sun 26th  7.30 8.00 9.00 15.25

Thu 30th 6.15 6.45 7.45 14.00
Fri 31st   7.00 7.30 8.30 14.40

Wednesday is neaps.

Location of B&B

The quickest way to get there is to take the A20 exit (the one just after the tunnel if you're coming from Dover). At the T junction turn left, then right at the next roundabout. Bear left then left again into Cheriton Road. The B&B is just on the right.
